Thanks Jana. As you know, Maass is not about playing it safe. And yep, the whole weekend was dedicated to going deeper into POV. It was all about how they feel, why they feel it, and how it affects their actions. What breaks them. Heals them. And why they will never be the same.

Good luck with your current wip!

Hi Karyn,
I caught the end of this interview on the radio the other day. It was horrifying. It's just one of the many horrifying stories to come out of the war.

Thank you for reminding me to put emotion into my story. Actually, it's more then just sticking it in. It needs to be woven into the story, a natural extension of the characters.

I was wondering why my character in my current WIP feels so lifeless. I'm not letting him feel anything. Sure, he's angry about things, but his feelings are on the surface. I need to go deeper.

Sounds like you had a great time in Calgary and learned a lot. Happy writing!

Hi JB! He is definitely crush worthy. He's confident without being over-confident, if you know what I mean? He's passionate about great writing and helping writers.

Yes, thankfully we didn't run out of gas! But it was close. The bright side, we have a great story to tell.

Kathy, you're going to love it! By the end, you're head will be ready to explode but you'll be so inspired and ready to take your writing to the next level. And don't be nervous! He's a great guy and he happily consented to having his picture taken with us.

I agree with you, Kathy. There seems to be this big push to create quantity instead of quality. His ideas of melding beautiful writing with meaningful writing and to support it's development with microtension give credence to his ideas on transcending genre.

One of his writing exercises involves going back over your manuscript and finding 250 places to produce more meaningful microtension. Intimidating? Yes. But I'm determined to do it and train myself to elevate the tension.

Enjoy the workshop!

Hi, Sounds like a great workshop. I have Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook, which I use all the time when developing characters and Fire in Fiction which also talks about micro-tension. I'm taking an all day intensive workshop from him on Thursday at the Pennwriters, Inc. Writers Island Conference in Pittsburgh. It's a week away and I'm already nervous about meeting him. He's also doing the keynote address on Friday night, and teaching one of the workshops. I have been waiting a year for this and I think I'm as excited as you were. I do think that much genre fiction has sacrificed that underlying micro-tension in the author's rush to complete their next novel. I don't think literary authors feel that pressure and take more time to dig deep and tap those emotions. There is something to be said for honing craft and taking the time to produce a quality read.
