Her vow of a low-key life is disrupted by a break-in and other strange happenings at her boutique. As the chair of Aspen Lake\u2019s Gothic Revival Festival, she\u2019s also drawn the ire of a religious fanatic. Kate is up to her stilettos in drama and intrigue including one sexy carpenter who\u2019s determined to get in her way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New to town, Seth Stone is seeking inspiration and solitude to concentrate on his art. Short on funds, he agrees to take on a second job restoring the damage to Kate\u2019s Closet. Trouble erupts along with the desire to get to know Kate better. When he\u2019s used as a pawn in a smear campaign against his gorgeous boss Seth fights back. But now the whole town is watching. Including the man determined to further his own agenda. Time is running out with nowhere to hide.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m so excited to finally be sharing Kate and Seth’s story, which I began writing in 2009 during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). It was such a mess I put it away and let it stew for a couple of years. Now it’s time to tell their story. This is the cover that gives face to it all. I love it. It captures the small town feeling of my fictional town, Aspen Lake. And those eyes! Perferct. Because more than one person is watching Kate’s every move.<\/p>\n

And here’s another little something I wrote in 2009. A Christmas tale for the now defunct Prairie Chicks Write Romance blog. So, if you’ve already raed it – thanks. But if you haven’t, here it is…<\/p>\n

His Family<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTell us the story, Daddy,\u201d pleaded Emma.<\/p>\n

Ella chimed in, \u201cTell us. Tell us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stefan Dalakis glanced down at his four-year-old twin daughters. Each one had a strangle hold on a leg. He pretended to try and shake them loose.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy!\u201d Little arms wrapped tighter around his legs as they giggled and shrieked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want to hear that old story. It\u2019s Christmas Eve. A time for Christmas stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo! The other story.\u201d Emma let go long enough to tug on his pant leg. \u201cPlease? Please?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith sugar on top?\u201d Ella gave him her special look, the one calculated to break the most stubborn soul.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He feigned indecisiveness for a few seconds before relenting. \u201cOkay, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019ll tell you the story if you\u2019re both in bed in the next five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He trailed after the ensuing whirl of pink pajamas and chatter as they circled the eight-foot Christmas tree one more time. Waited while they brushed their teeth, their dolls\u2019 teeth, their hair, and their dolls\u2019 hair. When they were finished they all climbed onto Ella\u2019s purple draped bed and he tucked one little sugar- charged princess in on each side.<\/p>\n

He remembered a time when the idea of family and children had turned his guts to water, given him unspeakable nightmares, and made him question everything he knew to be true.<\/p>\n

Men like him didn\u2019t have lives. They didn\u2019t have families. They existed to annihilate evil. End of story.<\/p>\n

He looked down as Emma\u2019s pudgy finger traced over the brilliant colors of the dragon inked onto his forearm. He had found a way to be both family man and social outcast.<\/p>\n

He smiled and started the story. \u201cSo there she was, watching that old movie, the one that always makes her cry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the caf\u00e9,\u201d added Ella as she scratched her cheek. \u201cBy herself.\u201d She pressed her head against his shoulder and he got a whiff of her little girl shampoo.<\/p>\n

He nodded then pressed a kiss on top of her blond curls. \u201cAll by herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCuz she was sad.\u201d Emma patted his cheek wanting her fair share of attention. He kissed her curls too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, she was.\u201d He paused, waited for them to look up. \u201cSo I tossed the ring box down on the table and I said-\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you said, \u2018Hey, you forgot this.\u2019\u201d Ella finished for him.<\/p>\n

Emma piped up, \u201cAnd she said, \u2018No, I didn\u2019t.\u2019\u201d And she shook one chubby finger.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, who\u2019s telling this story?\u201d He tried for stern. They were suitably unimpressed judging by the giggles.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are, Daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He grinned as he continued, \u201cThen she said, \u2018Don\u2019t, Stefan.\u2019 And I said, \u2018Don\u2019t what? Ask you to marry me? Too late. I already did.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd she said, \u2018I don\u2019t wanna marry you.\u2019\u201d Ella shook her head sending curls flying.<\/p>\n

\u201cCuz, you\u2019re trouble,\u201d added Emma.<\/p>\n

Which had him thinking they\u2019d already heard this story from someone else today. \u201cSomething like that. Bottom line, she said no and then she got up and left me sitting there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll by yourself,\u201d said a sympathetic sounding Ella.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a broken heart,\u201d offered Emma looking appropriately somber.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right.\u201d It had been the bleakest moment of his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut she came back!\u201d they announced all smiles again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, she did.\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced up at the woman leaning against the doorframe of the girls\u2019 bedroom and his heart squeezed. And because he wasn\u2019t stupid or neglectful, he offered up a prayer of thanks. Then he slipped in a very important detail of his own. \u201cBecause she couldn\u2019t live without me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna Watson-Dalakis rolled her eyes as she tossed a tea towel at his head. \u201cReally.\u201d She crossed her arms and raised a brow. \u201cThat\u2019s an interesting way of putting it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy! Mommy!\u201d Emma and Ella bounced up and down on their knees while they waited for Anna to settle in at the end of the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do remember a certain someone demanding I marry him.\u201d She smoothed a hand over Emma\u2019s cheek and tucked a stray strand of hair behind Ella\u2019s ear. \u201cBefore he came to his senses and realized he needed to act like a gentleman and ask nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those ocean blue eyes met his and he drowned for the millionth time. Her lips curved up into a smile and distracted him so she could get her fingers near the soles of his feet and then two tiny princesses launched themselves at him. Two minutes later those same princesses switched to chanting, \u201cKiss, Kiss.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was only too happy to oblige. His lips met hers and before he knew it Anna was batting him on the back of the head. He backed up, laughed and nodded in the direction of two little girls clapping their hands. \u201cIt\u2019s their fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUh huh.\u201d Anna clapped her hands. \u201cBedtime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely bedtime.\u201d He held up a hand to stop the protest. \u201cSanta can\u2019t come if you\u2019re awake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally the light went out. The girls had chosen Ella\u2019s bed tonight and were snuggled in and whispering.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoodnight, girls,\u201d he warned as he shut the door and followed his wife down the stairs.<\/p>\n

Anna turned on the bottom stair. \u201cWhat do you think they\u2019re planning?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care as long as it involves being asleep within the next ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood luck with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause then I\u2019m taking my gorgeous wife to bed and unwrapping my Christmas present early.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that before or after you put together the dollhouse?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
