Lily didn’t want to tell him anything. \u201cShouldn\u2019t we wait for one of the officers before getting into that?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, I\u2019m it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d Her fingers tightened around her cup, and the resulting pop from the pressure filled the small space. She glanced back at the door, all confusion, and he knew she was hoping for some kind of intervention. For someone else to join them, anyone else. \u201cWhat do you have to do with all this? Why are you back here?\u201d<\/p>\n
Stalling, he settled his arms on the tabletop. She didn\u2019t trust him. He also got that he was the last person she\u2019d want dropping back into her life. The file between them held some of her answers. The rest were buried so deep inside him, it made ignoring them all part of the routine.<\/p>\n
He offered her an anemic look of confusion.\u00a0\u201cHere?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYes. Here. In this room. In Aspen Lake. In the\u00a0parking lot of my school.\u201d She spread her hands out and motioned around her. \u201cHere!\u201d She averted her gaze and inhaled a deep breath before spotlighting him, apprehension darkening her eyes, deepening the blue color.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy job.\u201d To him, it was that simple.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour job?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been transferred to the Aspen Lake\u00a0detachment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re a cop?\u201d Her look of skepticism said it all.<\/p>\n
The air of disbelief pricked at his ego. He shifted in his chair. Like all the times in fifth grade when his teacher, Miss Carlisle, had asked him why he had no lunch. Had asked questions about his father.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs that so hard to believe?\u201d He had worked his ass off to get where he was, and he was a damned good cop. The work he did with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, and his reputation, proved his dedication to his job. None of which she\u2019d be aware of, or care about if she did. When he burnt a bridge, the only thing he left behind was ash.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, kind of. But then, how would I know? You didn\u2019t feel the need to let me in on all your plans. Remember.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we\u2019re going to do that here? Now? Rehash the past?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re right. There\u2019s absolutely no need. Feel free to skip ahead to the part about why you\u2019re back now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAmong other things, I\u2019m part of a collective task force targeting organized crime.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhich doesn\u2019t explain why you\u2019re back in Aspen Lake.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDoesn\u2019t it.\u201d<\/p>\n
She crossed her arms. \u201cYou think we have organized crime in Aspen Lake?”<\/p>\n
While it had never been his, he needed to remember this was her place, her town, and her sanctuary, as well as a police matter. He kept his response brief. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n
\u201cAnd the attack this afternoon? You think it was gang related?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t react, didn\u2019t deny, which told him a\u00a0lot.\u00a0He sighed. \u201cWe know gangs are recruiting in the\u00a0area. One gang in particular is increasing its presence, the Prairie Brotherhood. They run the gamut from drugs to money laundering and everything in between.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s any of this got to do with Jason? He\u2019s a thirteen-year-old child.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat would be the question of the hour. Because one of the men who attacked him this afternoon, the one with the web tattoo, is a prominent member of the Prairie Brotherhood.\u201d<\/p>\n
She frowned as she uncrossed her arms and leaned forward. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy?\u201d He asked, because he needed all the facts, all the information on Jason he was able to gather, and figured his best bet was sitting in front of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause it just doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re going to have to be a little more specific.\u201d \u201cHow would Jason even know this person?\u201d<\/p>\n
He tapped a finger on the file folder between\u00a0them. \u201cThis person<\/em> goes by the name Raphael Tessier. On the street he\u2019s known as the Enforcer, that\u2019s also his job description, by the way, and he\u2019s the number three man for the Prairie Brotherhood.\u201d<\/p>\nHer palms settled on the table, and her chest expanded with the long slow exaggerated breath she drew into her lungs. \u201cBut what could he want with Jason? I can\u2019t imagine Jason knowing this Enforcer person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOr how the Enforcer knows him?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo.\u201d She shook her head. \u201cNo idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow well do you know Jason?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell enough to know he\u2019d never get mixed up in\u00a0this kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen apparently you don\u2019t know him as well as\u00a0you think. The Prairie Brotherhood doesn\u2019t send out Raphael Tessier to terrorize kids. He has foot soldiers for that. He comes out when there\u2019s a very heavy score to settle. When all other options have failed. When only the most brutal tactics will do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hard to believe her skin could get any paler, but it did. He squelched the wave of pity and braced his arms on the table, ready to push back his chair. He needed distance. She reached across the table and laid a restraining hand on his arm. Before he knew it, memories got the drop on him. Of their special spot, of fogged over windows, of fumbling fingers and stubborn buttons. He set his butt back down in the chair. He didn\u2019t have a choice. Standing wasn\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, you think…\u201d She paused, collected herself. \u201cYou think they\u2019ll be back. Looking for him again. Don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n
He glanced down at her hand, registered the burn of his skin underneath hers. A four second time delay occurred before he stabilized enough to reply. \u201cThat\u2019s what we have to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her eyes squeezed shut for a couple of seconds. Her fingernails cut into his arm. \u201cAll right, you say you know your stuff. Tell me how to help him. I can talk to him. I can help.\u201d<\/p>\n
He carefully and methodically removed her hand from his arm and placed it on the table. \u201cYou can let the police do their job.\u201d<\/p>\n
She blinked, and the faintest flush of pink painted her throat and cheeks. \u201cI need to do\u2014”<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you don\u2019t.\u201d He gritted his teeth as she tucked her hands into her lap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Her chin went up. \u201cI\u2019m involved whether you like it or not, so let\u2019s skip past all the crap and move on to what I can do to help him. Because the one thing I will not do is stand aside and leave him to be terrorized by these…these people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Damn right you will, he thought. \u201cLet\u2019s not pretty it up. These people? These people are killers, thieves, drug dealers, and pimps. The police will handle it. The police will keep him safe.\u201d He knew what happened to the people caught in the Prairie Brotherhood\u2019s headlights, and she was the very last person he wanted trapped there.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo offense, but from everything you\u2019ve said, it might not be enough.\u201d A true teacher, she held up a hand as soon as he opened his mouth. \u201cHe is in my classroom five days a week. I can help keep him safe. You can concentrate on the bad guys and put every effort into finding them. I, on the other hand, will be concentrating on my student.\u201d She let her hand drop, took aim and fired her parting shot. \u201cHe\u2019s all alone. His father couldn\u2019t care less. You, of all people, should be able to relate.\u201d<\/p>\n
He closed his eyes at the low blow. Then he moved, made his way around the corner of the table, and came to stand beside her chair. \u201cStill collecting lost souls, Lily?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her top teeth snagged on her bottom lip, and heat swept under his skin. She pushed her chair back and stood. \u201cI don\u2019t need to justify my actions to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou will if those actions put you, or anyone else, in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou seem pretty sure of yourself.\u201d Her hands went to her hips. \u201cThat\u2019s new.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI do what it takes to get the job done.\u201d No matter what.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd when the job\u2019s done? When there\u2019s nothing left for you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
