I Is For Insight<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

There are all kinds of ways to gain insight into characters. Finding the answers to the big questions like a character’s greatest fear and their most treasured possession or their attitude towards money is helpful in creating multi-layered characters. Character interviews are very helpful. But sometimes you need to have a little bit of fun with them. Have them play a game. Like truth or dare.<\/p>\n

They’d rented a cabin for the weekend. All six of them. Deep in the north woods by a small lake.\u00a0The perfect spot. Secluded and quiet. Hiking trails through the bush, pickerel in the lake, and plenty of dead wood for an evening fire after plenty of the first two. Stars flooded the sky. Wood smoke wafted. Marshmallows flamed at the end of sticks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lily clapped her hands together. \u201cLet\u2019s play truth of dare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase leaned over and confiscated his wife\u2019s wineglass. \u201cYou\u2019re cut off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lily grabbed for her glass. \u201cOoooh, is the big, bad police officer scared?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace snorted. \u201cRemember that time at camp when we stuck out down to the beach and dared Chase to go skinny dipping?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat poor bear!\u201d Kate doubled over in laughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPoor bear, my ass. I almost died.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Seth held out a hand and Mike reached into the cooler beside his chair. \u201cThis I gotta hear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNope.\u201d Lily grinned, her red hair glinting in the firelight. \u201cBut you can ask him when it\u2019s your turn to play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll go first.\u201d Kate twisted to face Seth. \u201cTruth or dare?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Seth shrugged. \u201cWhat the hell, truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kate arched one perfect brow. \u201cIf you were in a beauty pageant what would your talent be?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Seth lifted Kate\u2019s hand and kissed her knuckles. \u201cYou know all about my special talents, princess.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAh, geez.\u201d Chase shot a pleading look in Mike\u2019s direction. \u201cMake it stop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe does have a tendency to over share. But he also hasn\u2019t answered the question.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, answer the question, young one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cServes you right. You\u2019re both going to feel even more inferior now. \u201c Seth sat back looking pleased with himself. \u201cI\u2019d wow them with my yo yo tricks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike blinked. \u201cPlease tell me you\u2019re kidding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d protested Seth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWalk-the-dog is your talent?\u201d Chase snorted in disbelief. \u201cGood thing you\u2019re pretty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Seth launched a marshmallow at Chase\u2019s head. \u201cAnd your special talent is?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo way. I chose dare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike pointed at the shoreline with its soft lapping waves. \u201cI dare you to take a dip in the buff. You\u2019d better be fast, the water\u2019s pretty cold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo way am I getting naked in front of mixed company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lily took pity on him. \u201cLeave your tighty whities on then, oh modest one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace snickered. \u201cMaybe you need company?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike frowned at her. \u201cYou\u2019re keeping your clothes on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace patted his cheek. \u201cI meant you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t my dare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMen don\u2019t feel the need to do everything in pairs.\u201d Chase stood up and stretched. \u201cI can dip my toe in all by myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase walked down to the shore and stripped down to his bare skin to catcalls and whistles. He sucked in his breath, took a few steps, and danced in place curses cluttering the air.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace framed her mouth with her hands. \u201cWatch out for bears.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase saluted back with his middle finger before diving in. When he was back in his chair dressed and wrapped in a blanket, he tilted his beer in Mike\u2019s direction. \u201cTruth or dare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike pretended to consider. \u201cTruth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase nodded. \u201cCraziest place you\u2019ve ever had sex?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace leaned over and clapped a hand over his mouth. \u201cDon\u2019t you dare answer that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike pushed her hand away and laughed. \u201cThe rules of the game state I must.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kate grinned. \u201cLet me guess, that time on the train?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lily snapped her fingers. \u201cOr the time at Niagra Falls!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike scowled at Grace. \u201cDo you tell them everything?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot everything.\u201d Grace winced at him. \u201cI didn\u2019t tell them about that time in Jamaica. In Negril-\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember.\u201d Mike crossed his arms. \u201cDidn\u2019t someone say something about dessert?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lily dropped into Chase\u2019s lap. \u201cI want to go to Jamaica.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase waggled his browns at her. \u201cGood idea. Sounds like an inspirational place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, okay. Enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kate shook her finger at Mike. \u201cI don\u2019t believe you\u2019ve answered the question yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike huffed out a breath. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m saying this \u2013 in the cab of Berl Erikson\u2019s tractor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Seth tapped his beer against Mike’s. \u201cDude.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace\u2019s head fell back as she laughed. \u201cOh yeah. I forgot about that time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chase groaned. \u201cPlease tell me it wasn\u2019t a threesome?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike ignored him and turned to Lily. \u201cTruth. Or dare?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
