No big surprise there. But this was a words-of-the-year type discussion which I took to heart and decided to write a romance flash fiction (sort of) piece that included 10 pre-detemined words, I looked up the Top 10 Words of 2018 according to Merriam Webster and gave it my best shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Top Ten Words of 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>justice,<\/li><li>nationalism,<\/li><li>lodestar,<\/li><li>epiphany,<\/li><li>feckless,<\/li><li>laurel,<\/li><li>pissant,<\/li><li>respect,<\/li><li>maverick,<\/li><li>excelsior.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sin City Escapades<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was justice, Laurel supposed, that she was forced to spend their one night away in Vegas at a cheesy motel named the Excelsior. There was nothing upward or onward about it. Payback she was sure for her last year\u2019s insistence they immerse themselves in the wonders of 19<sup>th<\/sup> England and take in the annual Jane Austen Festival in Bath, where the famous author had written Persuasion, Laurel&#8217;s favourite book, as well as Northranger Abbey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With its Roman baths, the quaint city had\ncharmed them both, or so she\u2019d assumed. Now she was forced to re-evaluate.\nBecause this <em>excursion<\/em> was either\npayback for dragging him to Bath, or her husband had lost his mind. She had\nneither the time nor the energy for either of those possibilities. She\ntightened the belt of her ridiculously short trench coat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good grief, could there be an anymore back of\nthe pack motel than this soggy excuse for a building. But Maverick, because she\nand her husband were all about the code names suddenly, had warned her not to\njudge the book by its cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She knocked on the door of number six, per his\ninstructions while rolling her eyes. Then she pressed her ear to the door when\nshe heard no reply praying he hadn\u2019t gotten himself murdered. She knocked again\nand thought she heard a faint bid to enter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Inside the room, her apprehensions eased. A quick glance around proved it was clean, the bed was a decent size and Jason &#8211; pardon her, Maverick &#8211; was lying in the middle of it wearing a tux and sipping a drink and completely intact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat are you drinking?\u201d she asked because she needed a companion to whatever was in his glass. Like pronto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He swirled his drink and winked. \u201cMartini.\nShaken, not stirred.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because, of course it was. She wasn\u2019t sure she had the energy for all this <em>secret assignment<\/em> business, but then he gave her his usual rueful smile and it somewhat made up for his insistence they take separate cabs from the airport. Like their budget could support the extravagance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> She dug her phone out and before she knew it he was off the bed and wrestling it from her hand while managing not to spill his drink. Which was kind of impressive, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> She frowned at him when he tossed her phone onto the zebra print bed cover. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cNo phones.\u201d He ran a finger down her cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cBut the kids-\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He pressed a finger against her lips. \u201cRemember, darling, Project Lodestar is high security. No one can know where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cOkay, you have got to stop it with the fake British accent.\u201d She waved a hand at the drink in his hand. \u201cWith all the rest of it, it\u2019s too much, honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason waggled his brows, then set his drink down and reached for her. \u201cWe\u2019ll work on your sense of nationalism later.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand why we can\u2019t be plain, ordinary Canadians. I mean respect to the British and all, but\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason tugged her closer and pushed an escaping strand of hair behind her ear. \u201cCan we just stick to the script? Okay? You said anything I wanted for my birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had said that, but in her defence she hadn\u2019t expected him to request they act out some trashy Bond-style fantasy. In Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDid you wear it?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was so making him go to Prince Edward Island to visit the Anne of Green Gables museum next summer. They were going to spend hours strolling down Lovers Lane and holding hands by the Lake of Shining Waters and drinking raspberry cordial until they puked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his hopeful, pleading look, she sighed.\n\u201cYes, I wore it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if the reaction of the feckless little\npissant outside the airport bathroom where she\u2019d changed clothes was any indication,\nshe didn\u2019t look half bad. Still, she\u2019d purchased a very over-priced trench coat\nto cover it up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet me see it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damn it, he knew she loved his growly voice. He\nuntied the belt of her coat then slowly slipped it free of the belt loops and\nlet it drop to the floor. Undoing one over-large button at a time, the low cut,\nthigh-length, body hugging, red dress was revealed and the coat slipped from\nher shoulders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou look beautiful.\u201d He pressed a kiss to her lips, slipped his hands around her waist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSame.\u201d It seemed churlish not to return the compliment, because he did look good in a tux. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, okay, maybe it had been awhile since\nthey\u2019d taken their time with each other. That epiphany gave her the courage to\npush his own jacket from his shoulders and run her hands over the white crisp linen\nof his shirt. She breathed in hints of citrus and sandalwood and felt his smile\nagainst the skin of her neck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laurel forgot about needing to make\narrangements for the kids\u2019 activities next week, or the report due at work. But\nnot the fact that her mother was dying. Pancreatic cancer, stage IV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason took her face in his hands. \u201cWe\u2019re going\nto get through this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She nodded as she blinked back tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He rested his forehead against hers. \u201cI\npromise.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe you,\u201d she whispered while trying to\nsmile. \u201cThat\u2019s why I agreed to meet a stranger named Maverick in a dive motel\nin Vegas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His hands reached around her shoulders to the\ntop of the zipper. \u201cAs much as I love this dress, I think you should take it\noff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fake British accent was back but the\nencouraging smile was all Jason.
