‘Tis the season of tiny chocolate bars and petite bags of candy. And we all have our favorites! Mine? Kit Kat bars! My daughter’s? Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! My husband’s? Rockets! Ever wonder just how much sugar is in Halloween candy? Me either. How many calories can there be in something that tiny? Besides, you burn calories jumping up from the couch to hand it out. Win!

The other Halloween fun we indulge in is pumpkin carving. When my son lived at home it involved power tools. Don’t ask. Very messy! Moving on. It also centers around one of my favorite Halloween fables. It is said that drunken farmer named Jack, known to be mean and nasty, some how managed to trick the devil ending with the devil promising to deny him entrance to Hell. But…not such a smart guy, this farmer Jack. Because of his nasty nature and his history of trickery he was also denied entrance in Heaven. When the devil kept his promise, Jack was forced to wander around Purgatory, he carved a lantern from a turnip and lit it with a lump of coal tossed to him from Hell. A parting gift? Bwahahaha

Those guiding his poor lost soul about, Jack wandered. Thus the Celts believed placing jack-o-lanterns outside would ward off evil spirits and keep Stingy Jack away.

Off the Grid postcard 1

perf5.000x8.000.inddShe wants to save the world. All he wants is a date.

A committed doctor to Vancouver’s inner city, nothing fazes Sophie Monroe—until a pregnant teenager shows up at her clinic on Christmas Eve requesting sanctuary and claiming the baby’s father is one of the city’s most influential businessmen. Sophie is in over her head and thankful when aid shows up in the form of an attorney who’s a little too confident and a lot too sexy.

Family Law expert Caleb Quinn just wants a date, a chance to prove he isn’t the elitist jerk Sophie assumes. Helping deliver a baby is not what he has in mind. But before long protecting a traumatized teenager and her son become his first priority. Even if saving them pits him against the baby’s father, a childhood friend. A man who will do anything to keep his dark side private.

But justice never comes cheap. Will doing the right thing cost Sophie and Caleb their reputations? Or their lives?

  1. I’d never heard the story about Jack. Fun! When I still had the Kid living at home, we would do Halloween up right, but she’s on her own now. Here we don’t do anything for the holiday. We live in a community that’s mostly retired folks and the houses are spaced apart to make trick-or-treating problematic, so we don’t see children in here. And if there aren’t any kids, decorating for Halloween seems pointless. Last year, I bought candy for Hubs and I, but this year, I don’t need the temptation around the house. So, Halloween will be just another day.

  2. Hi Karyn! I’m currently reading OFF THE GRID and loving it! Really good stuff!

I’ve never heard the Jack story either but it’s a good one. For me, the Halloween treat that haunts me is potato chips and cheezies. I should never buy them weeks before Halloween. I’ve already eaten half a box!

I hope everyone can hop on over to my blog and read my story about a Haunted Hotel. I’m giving away an ecopy of humorous paranormal BURNING LOVE. I’m #34 above.

  3. Hi Karyn,

My Achilles heel are those little Snickers. Frozen. I deliberately didn’t buy any chocolate this year because I can resist everything else but those.

Thank you for participating in my hop. Happy Halloween!
